Epitaph Workshop

***FLASHING GIFS BELOW!

A one day workshop

Brief: To write a epitaph for a "lost subject" and to then create a visual concept to accompany it.

I decided to look into the subject of language, and how it is used as a tactic to "kill a country". I looked at examples of China enforcing Mandarin onto Hong Kong (where their official language aside from English is Cantonese).

I also looked at how colonisation had a impact on language; how native languages are no longer spoken as they were force to speak the language of their colonisers. I looked into my Filipino heritage, and how a traditional script "baybayin" no longer is in use after the Spanish Empire enforced a Latin scripture.

I tried to imagine if I met my ancestors who most likely were in contact with the Spaniards, and I imagined that they wouldn't look into my eyes as I would perhaps be a stranger to them.

I produced 4 gifs where I tried to convey the colonisers shift from a trusting persona to a hostile one.
